Heroes and Virtues

Seven heroes from Indo-European mythology are mentioned in The Fate of Our Union as representatives of virtues: wisdom, intelligence, courage, fair combat, endurance, equanimity, and patriotism. Read the list of these heroes and match them with the virtue each one represents. Use their descriptions as clues. The answers can be found at the end of this post.


1. Aeneas, son of Venus, who led Trojan War survivors in search of a homeland (Graeco-Roman).

2. Arjuna, Son of Indra, who learned karma yoga from Krishna during a chariot ride (Indian).

3. Brynhild, valkyrie of Odin, who counseled Sigurd in rune magic and morality (Norse).

4. Cú Chulainn, son of Lug, who slew innumerable men in single combat (Irish).

5. Odysseus, descendant of Zeus, who devised the construction of the Trojan Horse (Greek).

6. Rostam, son of the simurgh-raised Sal, who overcame the Seven Trials (Iranian).

7. Sigurd, descendant of Odin, who slew the giant serpent Fafnir (Norse).

3. Brynhild represents wisdom.

4. Cú Chulainn represents fair combat.

5. Odysseus represents intelligence.

6. Rostam represents endurance.

7. Sigurd represents courage.
